Design Thinking is becoming an important part of product development. Design Thinking consist of various stages. It is not a linear process and includes a lot of back and forth progressions.
The concept of Design Thinking has revolutionized the Design Field. Product Designers are constantly implementing design thinking principles to enhance the product development experience.
What is Design Thinking?
Design thinking is a solution-based approach to solving complex problems related to a new product or service in the market.
The 5 Stage process is the base of design thinking
Empathize – Know the target users, understand their needs, pain points, and desired goals related to the product and build a persona.
Define – Identify the user problem that the product is going to solve. Also, list out the design challenges
Ideate – Generate as many ideas as possible from the team, focus groups, social networks, etc. Thinking outside the box and creativity comes into play at this stage. Again, depending on the product the scope of ideation varies significantly.
For example, a functional product such as engineering equipment would have to factor in the technical specifications and safety standards. The design of the product must be ergonomic to use.
Prototype – Create a scale down version for the users to test the product. It helps to keep the design cost low and gather as much feedback from the end-user and improve the final product.
Testing – The Designer must give a prototype to the user for testing. Designer will use the insights to iterate the prototype and make changes accordingly.
Why is Testing an Important Stage in Design Thinking?
Testing is an important stage and it is where the product reaches the end consumers. The testing happens in real-time.
Developer will obtain Customer feedback for the prototype through user testing. It will help in understanding the user’s perceptions towards the products in a better way.
User Testing enables to send the ideas from the customer to the designer to make the changes. The main aim of design thinking is to work out the best solution for a problem faced by a person.
The user feedback at this stage is very crucial as it is a stage right before the product launch. Hence, incorporating real-time end-user feedback at the final stage will help deliver the product more effectively.
1. User Experience and User Testing
Design Thinking helps in bringing creativity and innovation to the design table. It provides a lot of flexibility for the design team to work with the products.
Enhancing the User Experience is also an important concept under user testing. User testing helps the organization in many ways in the long run and short term.
2. Save Time and Money
Testing the prototype at an early stage will help organizations save time and money. Especially for software products, conducting an early test will help reveal bug fixes, code errors, functionality errors, etc.
It will help in working out all the errors before the product launch and helps save reputation as well as product quality.
3. Apply Insights from Testing
User Testing will provide a lot of insights into the functionality of the product. Many times the insights emerging from the user testing are not otherwise known to designers or software developers.
Hence, conducting user testing and focus group testing sessions help in enhancing the product functionality to a great extent.
4. Enhance User Satisfaction
Design Thinking gives ample importance to user satisfaction and customer experience. The User testing will help generate insights that will help the design team.
The team will work on product functionalities that will enhance overall user satisfaction.
Types of User Testing Methods to Follow
There are a few ways to conduct user testing. Initiate the User Testing depending on the product specifications and requirements of the designers.
1. Remote vs. In-person User Testing
Remote Testing is a very convenient practice and low cost. However, the designer has very little control over the user’s testing environment. For digital prototype testing, conduct the remote testing either in moderated or unmoderated ways.
However, in the case of in-person testing, the test environment will be under the designer’s control. They can interact with the user and get real-time first-hand information on the test product. It is a time-consuming and expensive practice.
2. Moderated vs. Unmoderated User Testing
Moderated user testing is a preferable user testing session. It helps with live remote testing and observes the users via a video call, or screen recording app to capture the test. It is an ideal option for software product testing.
Unmoderated tests can be conducted via testing platforms. There are online tools that will help conduct user tests quickly and with reduced effort.
Hence, in a nutshell, user experience testing is an evolving field. It is a very essential step in the design think concept. It helps organizations to launch effective products that will resonate well with the end-user and solve their problems more effectively.
